Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer announced today that he will vote to keep the government open, signaling that there is a viable path to avoid a government shutdown tomorrow.
“I believe it is my job to make the best choice for the country to minimize the harms to the American people. Therefore, I will vote to keep the government open and not shut it down,” Schumer said during a floor speech.
Schumer strongly criticized Republicans for insisting on their stopgap funding bill, known as a continuing resolution (CR), which would fund the government until September. He argued that Democrats are being forced to choose between accepting a bill they oppose or allowing a government shutdown — a situation he described as “no choice at all.”
“While the CR bill is very bad, the potential for a shutdown has consequences for America that are much, much worse,” Schumer stated.
The Democratic leader echoed concerns shared by other Senate Democrats, warning that a government shutdown would allow President Donald Trump and his administration to push through deeper federal cuts and policy changes.
With Schumer’s support, there is renewed hope that a last-minute deal can prevent the government from shutting down — but tensions between the two parties remain high.
